Apollo is a short young man, standing about 5'4" with a build that's on the small side and a little thinner than it should be. Though he's 22 years old, he's often mistaken for being younger thanks to the combination of his height and youthful appearance. Apollo has a medium-peach skin tone and a smooth, rounded face with big brown eyes and oddly forked eyebrows. His brown hair is slicked back showing off a wide expanse of forehead, with two spikes of hair at the front, one styled to be a little longer than the other.
His usual court outfit is a red suit, with a waistcoat instead of a jacket, along with a teal tie and a white shirt with rolled-up sleeves. During his off-time he still tends to dress in a presentable fashion if he has to go anywhere, usually button-up shirts and slacks. He still wears red in his wardrobe quite often like this. One part of his wardrobe that is never missing is the golden bracelet on his left wrist, which sports a carved pattern that vaguely resembles eyes. He quite literally wears this bracelet nearly everywhere, except when he's bathing or sleeping.
CANON POINT: After the end of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney MEMORY LOSS: No
Headcanon pre-game history: At barely past a year old, Apollo was found a short distance away from a police station, with nothing more than the clothes on his back, his bracelet, and a note that mentioned his first name. Though the authorities searched for his parents, and he even made it on a few milk cartons as a found child, they weren't able to locate his relatives or whoever had left him there. Thanks to his lack of a surname, he was given the name 'Justice' by a particularly creative social worker before being put into the California foster care system.
Apollo was already at an unpopular age for adoption, and as is typical with him, he didn't have any luck with that during his childhood. Though some years were better than others, it wasn't uncommon for him to go through four or five foster care placements within a year, sometimes ending up in group homes due to a lack of available space. This made Apollo a distant, sullen kid, though he was outwardly preoccupied with being eager to please out of the fear that he'd get sent away faster if he was a 'bad' child.
When he hit his teenage years, he became more frustrated and angry over his situation, and began to act out in ways that often involved other kids. Being so small meant that Apollo was often teased and bullied, which in turn would make him fight back - and usually lead to him losing. He was temporarily suspended from school a couple times thanks to this, his grades were taking a hit, and he was seriously considering running away... up until he happened to see Phoenix Wright on the local news.
He was at first intrigued, and later a little obsessed. Suddenly, he'd found a hero to believe in, someone that genuinely helped the people who had no one else to turn to. The concept greatly appealed to Apollo, during a time in his life where nothing felt fair. When he decided that he wanted to be a defense attorney like Phoenix, that gave him purpose. Apollo was able to pull his grades back up, he started avoiding fights more often, and by the time he was released from being a ward of the state at eighteen he had a scholarship for college and was finally able to turn his life around to something better.
After that, despite some hardships in the form of lacking money and dealing with the demands of some nearly crushing student loans, he was still able to graduate from law school quickly and take the bar a couple years earlier than most other American lawyers do.
PERSONALITY: Apollo is a rookie defense attorney who is determined in court and passionate about his job, to the extent of doing silly things like practicing his 'Chords of Steel' to shout louder during a trial. Unlike Phoenix, Apollo is more focused on the law itself and getting to the truth of the matter than he is on defending his clients - while he does put his all behind representing them, he also tends to be more doubtful of them. Considering all of his clients so far have done something or other that was shady or illegal, a little doubt isn't unwarranted.
As a contrast to how he is in the courtroom, outside of it Apollo is a fairly normal - and sometimes downright boring - person. He places a lot of importance on being a responsible adult, never mind that he's still at an age where it's acceptable to still be a little immature. Unfortunately for him, it's not all that hard for someone to shake what would otherwise be a mild demeanor. He's hot-blooded, which is really only another way of saying that it's very easy for him to swing between emotions, provided he has the right kind of stimulus. He easily gets nervous, reacts immediately to being startled or scared, and even burst into tears once when he thought Trucy had been in mortal danger. But when given a little distance from whatever set him off, Apollo usually calms down quickly enough, too. Despite this, he's usually more logical than emotional, which means that he struggles a lot with the emotions that end up going against his own common sense.
Otherwise, Apollo isn't a very confident individual. He's a bit pessimistic, usually expecting things to go wrong... but on the other hand, his own determination tends to keep that pessimism from overwhelming him. He has one of those 'if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself' attitudes, and though he does accept help when he needs it (such as those times in court), for the most part he tries to achieve things on his own. This makes him very determined individual general, to the point that giving up or admitting that he might have a problem is a kind of weakness he's reluctant to display. While Apollo does have his fair share of problems that bother him - such as abandonment issues, lack of trust in people, and struggling self-worth - he doesn't like to show that he's anything but well-adjusted, and Apollo rarely talks about his childhood or his lingering fears with anyone. Getting him to open up usually takes a lot of time and patience.
One other important thing to note about Apollo is that he is a jaded character, though not as much as some others in the series. While his childhood as a foster child left him exposed to a lot of bad things, he held onto hope after discovering Phoenix Wright and learning that there are people out there trying to make the world better for everyone. Once he did achieve his dream of being a lawyer, of course, he found out that things weren't all they were cracked up to be, and his brief spots of optimism never seem to last very long. He has a sarcastic streak, and while he usually isn't mean about it, it gets more obvious when he's stressed out or annoyed with someone. Apollo is also a little vain, taking great care to keep his hair fixed and secretly wishing he could be cool.
With so many people having passed in and out of his life, Phoenix and Trucy Wright are the two most important people to him simply due to the fact that they have remained a persistent presence for the four months he's worked at the Wright Anything Agency. They are essentially his co-workers, with Trucy acting as his assistant in court and Phoenix a sort of dubious occasional mentor figure. Apollo gets along well with Trucy and tries to keep an eye out for her, feeling responsible for her well-being while she's in his care. Phoenix tends to annoy him both for his teasing and his extremely vague methods of guidance, but Apollo is getting used to it, especially now that he knows that Phoenix actually does have a method behind his madness, so to speak.
POWERS: Through the combination of both an inborn talent and the bracelet he wears, Apollo is basically a living lie detector. His bracelet alerts him to even the slightest tension in others, and since liars subconsciously tense up in the act of telling a lie, Apollo is able to see this happening in court. From there, he can find the nervous tic of the liar and then use that as evidence that they're lying. (In-game, this is called the Perceive system).
The more complicated explanation of how this works is that the sensing of tension in others is actually an inborn, inherited ability. It's similar to 'kinetic sight' and is something passed through the Gramarye bloodline. Since Apollo isn't very skilled with the ability yet, it's his bracelet that alerts him to the tension he's unaware he's seeing. Seeing it makes him tense in return, which makes the bracelet feel tighter on his wrist. Since the bracelet itself made of a special metal that adjusts to the wearer's size based on body heat, it will adjust to fit anyone that wears it - but only works as an indicator for those who have the Perceive ability in the first place.
This ability absolutely depends on sight, and his ability to see the other person's body language. This means that he'd be able to use it while watching a video, but if it's only audio or text then it's simply not possible. While using Perceive, in his own vision, everything goes red and time seems to slows down - but other than an even more intense stare than usual, there aren't any other external clues that he's doing it.
Apollo's power will not be limited, as it is a small, subtle ability in the first place.
