Frequently Asked Questions

How would you sum up the game?

Basically, it's an open world, post-apocalyptic survival game that has fun things like super dangerous neuro technology to play with. Memory loss, memory gain, new skills, new bodies, lots of stuff can happen!

Do I need to know about Dollhouse to play here?

Not really. It helps, but we've modified the world some to fit better for a RP environment anyway. We'll be sure to explain everything in as much detail as we can about the world but if you get confused, don't be afraid to ask us questions!

What kinds of characters can be apped here?

Canon universe, alternate universe and original characters can all be apped here. There can only be two versions of a character, though. One OU and one AU.

What's your stance on non-human characters?

Most of them can be apped in without any issues. If it's humanoid, we'll take it. Vampires, mermen, aliens, anything. Issues only arise when characters are large and powerful enough to effect the world as a whole. Transformers in their original state are a good example of this. All non-human characters have the option of being turned human upon entry, though.

Do we need a human PB for our characters even if they're not human?

Only if you're planning on turning them human. Otherwise whatever canon material or fanart that's available is fine.

So this game is based in the Dollhouse universe. Why can't I app as a Dollhouse character?

Long story short, they're probably going to get used as NPC's in the future. The game isn't contained just to New York. There's nothing stopping say, Echo and Paul Ballard from stopping by sometime in relation to the metaplot of the game. That said, if you really have your heart set on playing a Dollhouse character, come talk to the mods! We'd be happy to negotiate!

Can I apply as an original character that already lives in the world of Striatum?

Yes, you may, but not as a first character in the game. We also ask that if you plan on applying as someone who is a former Rossum employee that you come talk to us first. We might have some juicy metaplot ideas to get you involved with! Random citizens can be applied for without talking to us, though.

Can we canon update our characters?

Yes, but only every few months. We don't want to end up with characters from ongoing canons to get updated after every single week after the newest episode. You can request a canon update on the Applications page.

What languages are spoken in the game?

Once you come through the Bridge, your character will know English just for ease of communication, even if they didn't before. Rossum's neural technology is fun that way, it can imprint knowledge of any language into your brain in an instant. Which also means that somewhere down the line, you all could end up speaking Chinese and crazy shenanigans will ensue. But for the most part, everyone will speak English.

Why do we have to "Ditch the Tech"?

Because if you don't, you'll risk getting hit by a blanket signal. No matter how smart and experienced your character is with technology, it's in their best interest to stay away from any kind of tech unless it's been declared signal-proof unless they want their brain to ooze out their ears.

So is that why Striatum doesn't have a network?

Yeah, more or less. But we might get one in the future depending on player involvement.

How does gameplay work, then?

All interactions will happen at [community profile] striatum.  For now, this is a prose based game but if you really want to action spam your threads instead, we're not going to kill you over it.

Your plots are lovely and all, but can I run my own?

Sure can! Plots that will effect more than 3-4 characters should be run by the mods first, though.

Can we leave New York City?

Of course! You could travel all of North America if you really wanted to. If you had the means, you could even sail across the ocean and see how London's doing with this whole apocalypse thing. It'd just be really hard, really dangerous and kind of insane to go out there on your own without a plan.

Is there any form of currency in the city?

Not really. Apocalypse, remember? If you need something, you're either going to have to find it on your own or trade with someone else for it. The small compound where the Bridge is housed, however, does tend to keep enough food so that your characters won't be starving if they stay close. It may not be the best but. It'll keep you alive, right?

How does my character arrive in the game?

Unless they're a character already built into the world, they'll come through the Bridge. Details are on the Setting page.

How does time progress in the game?

Generally, it'll be about the same as real time but it's fairly subjective. The only thing really set in stone anymore is the passing of the seasons. If your character wants to try to keep track of months and days, they may.

So how does this "jossing mechanism" thing work?

Before any event or plot, we'll put a sign up post on the OOC comm listing possible fates for your characters. They could die, they could lose an arm or a leg or they could even be lucky enough to get out of the situation unscathed. If you sign up, then we'll roll some dice to see which character gets each outcome. Shortly before it's to be played out, we'll let you know what's going to happen to your character! Of course, this is completely optional and is only for those brave enough to leave the fate of their character's in the hands of the evil mod team. If you participate and don't get the outcome you wanted, well, you just got Jossed!

If my character has lost their memories, how long will it take for them to gain them back?

That's all up to you. It could last anywhere from a few weeks to a year! However long you feel like playing your character minus their memories.

What if I want to do a log with an NPC?

We're cool with that! Just let us know who you'd like and we'll tag in asap!

Do logs with NPCs count towards activity?

They most certainly do.

What if I have a question that isn't listed here?
