Frequently Asked Questions

How would you sum up the game?

Basically, it's an open world, post-apocalyptic survival game that has fun things like super dangerous neuro technology to play with. Memory loss, memory gain, new skills, new bodies, lots of stuff can happen!

Do I need to know about Dollhouse to play here?

Not really. It helps, but we've modified the world some to fit better for a RP environment anyway. We'll be sure to explain everything in as much detail as we can about the world but if you get confused, don't be afraid to ask us questions!

What kinds of characters can be apped here?

Canon universe, alternate universe and original characters can all be apped here. There can only be two versions of a character, though. One OU and one AU.

What's your stance on non-human characters?

Most of them can be apped in without any issues. If it's humanoid, we'll take it. Vampires, mermen, aliens, anything. Issues only arise when characters are large and powerful enough to effect the world as a whole. Transformers in their original state are a good example of this. All non-human characters have the option of being turned human upon entry, though.

Do we need a human PB for our characters even if they're not human?

Only if you're planning on turning them human. Otherwise whatever canon material or fanart that's available is fine.

So this game is based in the Dollhouse universe. Why can't I app as a Dollhouse character?

Long story short, they're probably going to get used as NPC's in the future. The game isn't contained just to New York. There's nothing stopping say, Echo and Paul Ballard from stopping by sometime in relation to the metaplot of the game. That said, if you really have your heart set on playing a Dollhouse character, come talk to the mods! We'd be happy to negotiate!

Can I apply as an original character that already lives in the world of Striatum?

Yes, you may, but not as a first character in the game. We also ask that if you plan on applying as someone who is a former Rossum employee that you come talk to us first. We might have some juicy metaplot ideas to get you involved with! Random citizens can be applied for without talking to us, though.

Can we canon update our characters?

Yes, but only every few months. We don't want to end up with characters from ongoing canons to get updated after every single week after the newest episode. You can request a canon update on the Applications page.

What languages are spoken in the game?

Once you come through the Bridge, your character will know English just for ease of communication, even if they didn't before. Rossum's neural technology is fun that way, it can imprint knowledge of any language into your brain in an instant. Which also means that somewhere down the line, you all could end up speaking Chinese and crazy shenanigans will ensue. But for the most part, everyone will speak English.

Why do we have to "Ditch the Tech"?

Because if you don't, you'll risk getting hit by a blanket signal. No matter how smart and experienced your character is with technology, it's in their best interest to stay away from any kind of tech unless it's been declared signal-proof unless they want their brain to ooze out their ears.

So is that why Striatum doesn't have a network?

Yeah, more or less. But we might get one in the future depending on player involvement.

How does gameplay work, then?

All interactions will happen at [community profile] striatum.  For now, this is a prose based game but if you really want to action spam your threads instead, we're not going to kill you over it.

Your plots are lovely and all, but can I run my own?

Sure can! Plots that will effect more than 3-4 characters should be run by the mods first, though.

Can we leave New York City?

Of course! You could travel all of North America if you really wanted to. If you had the means, you could even sail across the ocean and see how London's doing with this whole apocalypse thing. It'd just be really hard, really dangerous and kind of insane to go out there on your own without a plan.

Is there any form of currency in the city?

Not really. Apocalypse, remember? If you need something, you're either going to have to find it on your own or trade with someone else for it. The small compound where the Bridge is housed, however, does tend to keep enough food so that your characters won't be starving if they stay close. It may not be the best but. It'll keep you alive, right?

How does my character arrive in the game?

Unless they're a character already built into the world, they'll come through the Bridge. Details are on the Setting page.

How does time progress in the game?

Generally, it'll be about the same as real time but it's fairly subjective. The only thing really set in stone anymore is the passing of the seasons. If your character wants to try to keep track of months and days, they may.

So how does this "jossing mechanism" thing work?

Before any event or plot, we'll put a sign up post on the OOC comm listing possible fates for your characters. They could die, they could lose an arm or a leg or they could even be lucky enough to get out of the situation unscathed. If you sign up, then we'll roll some dice to see which character gets each outcome. Shortly before it's to be played out, we'll let you know what's going to happen to your character! Of course, this is completely optional and is only for those brave enough to leave the fate of their character's in the hands of the evil mod team. If you participate and don't get the outcome you wanted, well, you just got Jossed!

If my character has lost their memories, how long will it take for them to gain them back?

That's all up to you. It could last anywhere from a few weeks to a year! However long you feel like playing your character minus their memories.

What if I want to do a log with an NPC?

We're cool with that! Just let us know who you'd like and we'll tag in asap!

Do logs with NPCs count towards activity?

They most certainly do.

What if I have a question that isn't listed here?

Here's an application question: as an RP sample, is it okay if we link to a musebox or DR thread?

Also, what exactly is the layout? I know that the city above is the same layout as New York City, but what about the bridge and the place that people recuperate underground? Is it a bunker where there can be permanent residency, or are people expected to eventually go up and try to find shelter in the city?

Thanks for the answer! And now I have another question. :P

For IC interactions, should we post exclusively with the log format with our actual post under a cut, or is the log format only there for planned/open logs?

Also, how does the tag system work?

Thank you! Also, I swear that I'll run out of questions. Eventually.

What does the above world look like? I've never seen Dollhouse, so if they show it there, I don't know. Like, is all the infrastructure basically intact, just with Butchers running around ready to kill you? Or are buildings falling apart everywhere and plants grow everywhere and animals roam around, ready to be shot with an arrow or something? I have a lot of images in my head, but I don't want to write about a desert wasteland if you're thinking of something like nature taking over the city.

So, query about tech ditching!

Suppose I app someone who has extremely advanced alien technology fused to her spine that she literally can't get rid of?

For all intents and purposes this alien tech - Kahji Da - is a sentient machine. He provides all the powers said character has and is canonically demonstrated to be pretty godlike compared to most Earth machines in many situations, but I have no idea how advanced the Dollhouse universe tech is so...

Would it be too much of a 'cheat' to say that because this unditchable tech is from space it's too different to really be messed with by the signals in game?

Well, Kahji is battle suit basically and was built as a destroyer entity. Technically the suit he creates has weapons that do things like vaporizing human beings and destroying the fabric of space time but he's learned his host's moral objection to killing people and has curbed his behavior accordingly.

Basically in the suit his host, Brenda, is pretty strong, can fly, can communicate with other technology. The suit can clothe her and produce other temporary items like pieces of paper or a piece of rope etc. She has energy canons, infrared and x-ray vision, shields, various trap and subdue weapons. She can form blades and a whole array of tools from the suit. Technically, she can bend space and time and move from one place to another through wormholes in a form of teleportation but it's difficult to do and used rarely.

I know that she's got a LAUNDRY list of powers and honestly it would be boring to drop in with the ability to do all of that so I was thinking of doing basically what she had to do in canon over again - since Kahji Da is intelligent and can adapt to being interfered with perhaps when Brenda arrived he was scrambled by the signals at the same point as she lost her memories and then he thereafter builds up immunity to the interference - so she's able to connect with Kahji Da but she'll still be vulnerable to any other technology.

Basically, as she regains her memories, he picks up ques of what he used to operate like from her mind and starts rebuilding his programming. She'll learn little stuff at first (though I can just straight up axe her technology communication powers given the setting) and let her upgrade to being able to do things like fly and turn on infra red eyes later.

So, I'm thinking at the top level maaaaaybe she could learn to do the worm-hole jump? But I'd leave the really big world destroying stuff out of reach permanently since that really wouldn't serve a purpose to playing her in this kind of game anyway.

I know it's still a lot of powers, just... eh. Superhero canon. ^^;;;

Oh, I have a question!

So, we don't get to see much of Clint in his everyday personality in Avengers and his (very brief) appearance in Thor because he's either brainwashed or recovering from being brainwashed - however what we DO see indicates that he's very similar in temperment to his comic book counterpart - is it cool for me to extrapolate on his shown personality using his personality in the comics as a jumping off point?

If you want to app a Transformer/Cybertronian, instead of turning them human, can you just make them smaller and less powerful?

Are new characters still arriving on the first day (the open post date) or can they arrive on other days/dates? If different dates, does it have to be a specific date to accommodate for the Bridge operations or can a date be picked out of the blue?

Not particularly. Any one of the scientists that are usually there is fine with me.
